About Clare Island

Clare Island is one of the liveliest islands on Ireland’s west coast. The island has a growing population of 163 locals, many of whom are great characters who are more than happy to stop and chat along the road or spin a yarn in one of the pubs during an evening music session. The island hosts a number of festivals and events throughout the year from a big new year’s party to Feilí Ceoil to Singles Activity Based Weekends to the Clare Island Regatta and many more. Most weekends from May to September both pubs have live bands ranging from traditional to country to the odd wild card. There is also plenty going on in the off season.

Clare Island is the largest of the 365 islands in Clew Bay, three and a half miles off the west coast of County Mayo, Ireland and can be reached VIA FERRY from Roonagh Pier.

Grace O'Malley CastleFormerly the home of the infamous Granuaile (Ireland’s legendary Pirate Queen of the 16th century), the island has a very dramatic coastline which offers a striking silhouette against the horizon when viewed from the mainland.  This is largely due to Knockmore (which rises up to 461 metres), whose western cliffs are home to a vast array of nesting sea birds.  In addition, the island also boasts some of the most studied flora and fauna in all of Europe.

Clare Island Adventures takes all of this stunning scenery and landscape and transforms it into your obstacle courses while undertaking our many activities of choice.

From a natural point of view, the island is very rich and offers so much to see and do. Our focus is on the more adventurous activities (not all of them hair-raising), but if you’re more into history than hiking, and want to explore without breaking a sweat, you can find plenty more to occupy yourself on www.clareisland.ie.  Better still, extend your stay with us and combine adventure with culture and heritage.
