School’s out for summer and the pressure is on to keep the kids busy for the next couple of months.
Well, on Clare Island we’re getting things off to a flying start this weekend. There’s so much to do for folks of all ages and various interests, starting on Friday with the Feile Ceoil and going right through to Sunday night with the Lighting of the Towers.
If you’re looking for something to do, here’s five reasons to come to Clare Island:
Luke’s Family Fun Day/Fundraiser for Barretstown: Saturday, July 1st.
A busy day of walks, climbs, beach games, a barbecue, plus an auction and raffle for those making a night of it too. This has been organised with the dual purpose of commemorating islander Patricia O’Grady’s son, while also raising funds for Barretstown, an organisation that was a great support to Luke and all the family. Pier 2 Pier: Sunday, July 2nd.
This is another fundraising event, whereby participants will either swim or kayak the 3 miles from Roonagh to Clare Island to raise funds for the RNLI, Westport & Louisburgh Order of Malta and the Jack & Jill Foundation. Registration is now closed but supporters are very welcome to cheer on the brave swimmers and paddlers. They head out from Roonagh at 9am, so if you’re on a morning ferry crossing, keep an eye out for them and give them a loud cheer. Likewise if you’re on the island when they start to land!
Clare Island Regatta: Sunday, July 2nd.
Lots more family fun with races on and off the water and a festival atmosphere on the beach.
Lighting of the Towers: Sunday, July 2nd.
Join us at 11pm on Sunday night when we light the Napoleonic Tower in tandem with the lighting of the Achill Tower, just across the bay, and Erris Tower. Bring some refreshments and join in the sing-song – the atmospthere will be magical.
The Clare Island Féile Ceol: Friday, June 30th to Sunday, July 2nd.
Kicking off on Friday night and running through to Sunday afternoon, the weekend offers performances and workshops in music, song and dance.
